Photon Counting Energy Dispersive Detector Arrays for X-Ray Imaging

Photon Counting Energy Dispersive Detector Arrays for X-Ray Imaging are modules dedicated for use in CT imaging. Based on the high rate counting and the energy measurement of individual X-Ray photons through direct conversion, such detector arrays offer the decomposition of tissue material (tissue color mapping) through simultaneous scanning of different X-Ray energies, while at the same time reducing the X-Ray patient dose. Currently, this new and innovative way of measuring X-Ray photons for CT exams enables energy dispersive X-Ray imaging up to 107 counts per second and per mm2 in a fully functional CT detector module.

Related technology

The application is based on Fast Front-end Readout Electronics developed at CERN.

Added Value

  • Decomposition of tissue material through simultaneous scanning of different X-Ray energies.
  • Reduced X-Ray dose for the patient.
  • Low power consumption (2.1 mW/Channel), low noise (470e- RMS) and fast readout electronics (30ns).
  • Counting rate up to 107 counts per second and per mm2 in a fully functional CT detector module.
